Romancing the Square

Celebrate the Spirit of Valentine’s Day
Saturday, February 9, from 4 to 6pm

Capitol Square invites everyone to its annual “Romancing the Square” event on Saturday, February 9, from 4 to 6pm, when businesses hand out chocolate squares and colorful balloons and offer other Valentine specials throughout the East Arlington business district. This event is free and open to the public, with attractions for adults, teenagers, and families.

“Romancing the Square is a festive mid-winter celebration that brings friends and neighbors out to engage in fun activities together.” says Jan Whitted, owner of Artbeat Creativity Store and Studio. “Our art happenings, store specials, and tasty treats are designed to get you in the mood for Valentine’s Day.”

The event kicks off with a Valentine Weaving Buffet at Artbeat (212A Mass Ave), where guests can choose different patterns of half-hearts and weave them together in infinite combos. Guests can enjoy a friend discount on any studio project and special pricing on chocolate greeting cards. From 6 to 8 PM Artbeat will hold an “Eclipse of the Heart” Canvas painting class where artists can also transfer their original artwork onto mugs.

Complimentary two-player games will be offered at The Adventure Pub (190 Mass Ave), Capitol Square’s newest eatery, where guests can choose from a menu of board games along with a meal. A few demo games will be set up so guests can try out new ways to cooperate or compete with a partner.

Stop in at Lotus Flow Studio (185 Mass Ave) for pink herbal tea, a demonstration of heart-opening yoga poses, and discounts on class passes and monthly memberships.

Adults will enjoy Cocktail Hour, from 4 to 6pm, at 13FOREST Gallery (167A Mass Ave) while perusing their selection of locally made art, craft and jewelry and enjoying their current exhibit, Winter Garden, which celebrates the very essence of the holiday with three artists’ vibrant takes on the flower, in its endless variety, beauty and symbolic potential.

The Muse’s Window (191 Mass. Ave.) will offer 15% off their curated selection of handmade jewelry. Maxima Gifts (212 Mass Ave) will be offering a chocolate tasting and Love Card discount giveaways, and Derby Farm Flowers & Gifts (218 Mass Ave) will offer homemade truffles and a chance to order flower bouquets for Valentine’s Day.

Thrive Juice Café will add double chocolate powerballs to its menu, and Quebrada Baking Co (208 Mass Ave) will have a supply of heart-shaped cookies and cakes for purchase. At Town Tavern (201 Mass Ave), mention Romancing the Square and get a free Fried Oysters Mushroom appetizer with your early dinner.
